Music With Sara Class Info

Welcome to Music With Sara
Guidelines and Information

Music with Sara is a Parent/Caregiver and Me Music Class. Parents/Caregivers are expected to remain with their child during class. The activities and songs are designed to help you do them at home with your child as well.

• If your child does not want to participate, it’s OK! Let him or her watch, or walk around and enjoy the class. Your child will learn from you, so that is why I encourage parents to participate as much as they can. Some children want to stay in their parents’ laps the entire time, and others want to be in another part of the room. Most important, please make sure your child stays safe while inside the room.

• Instead of telling your child what to do, please show them what to do. This class is about having FUN with music!

• Please do not eat in class. If a child needs a snack or a drink during the class time, please step into the waiting room or outside to do so. Thank you.

• If your child drools on or puts an instrument in his/her mouth, please use the alcohol spray provided to clean off the instrument before putting it back.

• If for some reason your child does not want to put away an instrument consider letting him or her hold it for a while. Once another prop is given it may be easier for the child to let go of the other one!

• Please call or email if you are going to miss a class. This will allow others to use your spot for demos or make-ups.

• Music With Sara does not require the purchase of any materials. If there is a particular song your child enjoys at home, please email me if you would like to have it included in one of the classes. If your child enjoys a particular song from the class, I can provide you with a song list for that class, or lyrics.

• If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to email me regarding the class.

Thank you for joining us!

Special Events

Since 1998 I've been playing weddings, quiceañeras, and funerals. I continue to play the 9am mass at Cristo Rey Church in Atwater every 1st Saturday of the month. Cristo Rey is located at 4343 Perlita Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90039.

For special events, I sing, play organ or piano, and am accompanied by my good friend Kimberly Gallo. She plays guitar and sings with me.

If you are interested in contracting us for your special event, please contact me for prices and more information. For these events we normally sing traditional songs in English and/or Spanish in accord with the Catholic Mass. And of course we play for any other religious or non-denominational service. We also play other events such as birthdays, farewells, or funeral viewings.

Instruments

I have had the opportunity to take my own kids to music classes, such as the Music Class and Music Together. Both provided fun learning environments for my kids and included some great props. Since I've started teaching Music Classes for children, I've had the opportunity to acquire more props and instruments for my classes.

Pictures will be coming soon so stay posted for updates!

In each class we use at least 5-7 of these types of props or rhythm instruments:

Balls - We use balls made of cloth at each session. Students either throw or pass the balls in rhythm with their parents or caregivers, but usually it ends up in a game of "lets get crazy and throw the balls all over the place", and when accompanied by James Brown, it's always fun.

Dyna-Bands - We have hot pink elasta-bands which are used for stretching. I model for the students how to use them as a pseudo-upright bass, holding one end of the band under my foot, and pulling the other end with my hand, and plucking it like a string. It's a lot of fun!

Egg or Animal Shakers - Multi-colored egg and animal shakers for rhythm patterns, or to use as we sing along with favorite songs.

Lumni-Sticks or Claves - These smaller, finished, wood sticks are used to practice rhythms. I like to use these to sound out sounds, words, or names with different syllables. For example, if we shout - "Butterfly" - we play that word on the clave or lumni stick as we say the word. Then I'll ask the students to play "Butterfly", and instead of saying the word, the student will hit the sticks 3 times - one time for each syllable in the word.

Rhythm Sticks - Kids LOVE rhythm sticks. Not only because they are multi-colored, but because there so many things we can do with them. We always play them along with a song, but before that, we make sure we know how to use them as airplanes, antlers, stilts, rabbit ears, walking devices, chopsticks, or whatever else the children or parents can think of!

Scarves - We use small and large silk or nylon dancing scarves. These too have endless possibilities. We sometimes even end up playing dress up with these as we wrap them around our heads, waists, and arms! Kids also love to see these fly through the air as we wave them around the room as we dance!

The free-instrument bag - Of course we have a free-instrument play-time where children use maracas, tambourines, cymbals, triangles, blocks, animal bells, or whatever else they can find in this bag. We lay the instruments out on the floor so they can each have a chance to try different ones.

The-Co-Op Hand - or as I call it - The BIG hair scrunchy. This over-sized hair scrunchy is used sitting or standing. Children and their parents hold on to a piece as we walk around, go in and out of the circle, pull it as far back as we can, and jump or fall to the ground. It's my favorite prop for ring-around-the rosey, and some other songs, and I look forward to finding new uses for this FUN prop. When we sit on the floor and bounce it, it's a wonderful tool to feel the pulse and rhythm of a song.

The tunnel - It may not seem as the tunnel has much to do with music, but we always have fun listening to a good song as children crawl through Mr. Tunnel. It gives parents a chance to groove to whatever disco or funk jam I decide to play that day, and the kids a chance to make it through Mr. Tunnel at least 5 times before the music stops!

Stuffed Animals - Here and there I bring a bag of teddy bears, doggies, or whatever else I can find for children to hold as we sing. It's always fun to sing to your doggy or teddy, give it a hug, throw it up, and mimic what the parents do for our lap songs.

Resonator Bells - Each resonator bell has its own rich tone. Students use mallets to ring the bell and listen to others. It sounds beautiful when we choose bells from one chord as we each hit the bell at the same time. We use this to improvise or to use along with nursery rhymes.

I'm always looking for more props and instruments - so keep checking the blog. More to come soon!
